Introduction: The injury of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is a relatively common injury among the young and healthy population. In Norway almost 2,000 ACL reconstructions are performed each year. Reports state that there is a subset of patients who remain unstable and only 60% are able to regain prior function after surgery. Additionally, degenerative joint disease may develop in up to 50% of the patients at long-term follow-up. With the “Double-bundle” reconstruction the ACL is reconstructed by two, instead of one bundle. Biomechanically, it has been shown that the Double-bundle technique improves the knee stability compared to traditional Single-bundle reconstruction, but clinical studies have so far not been convincing, and studies with focus on the patient subjective outcome are few.
The purpose of the study is to compare the subjective scoring between the two techniques 2 years after surgery, and also to compare the clinical and functional outcome, and the radiographic findings, in the two groups.
Method: This project is a randomized, controlled trial, including 120 patients with a primary ACL injury. The participants were recruited from Oslo University Hospital and Martina Hansens Hospital and were randomized to either Double-bundle or Single-bundle reconstruction technique of the ACL.
Results: The results of this study may give further knowledge to whether the Double-bundle procedure does contribute to better or worse subjective, clinical and functional results than the Single-bundle procedure, and whether this procedure should be offered the ACL injured patients in the future.
