Description

Background: Of the methods available for the assessment of hip strength, the most cost-effective and commonly used hand-held dynamometry (HHD) has been identified as a reliable method for assessing hip strength. However, HHD is susceptible to between-tester bias, with the strength and experience of the assessor influencing testing scores. Recently, a novel field-testing device (The GroinBar, VALD Performance, Australia) has been developed to assess hip strength of both limbs simultaneously. It comprises an adjustable rig fitted with four independent and adjustable load cells.

Although the GroinBar has increased in popularity, there is a lack of normative strength values with only one study examining hip strength in a small sample of elite male Australian footballers.

Aims: The aim of this project is to provide normative hip adduction and abduction scores for elite senior and junior football players of both genders using the GroinBar.

Methods: We plan to measure hip adduction and abduction strength of a convenient sample of 400 elite footballers recruited through our personal network in the greater Oslo region and belonging to the following groups;

- 100 elite male players (age >19)

- 100 elite female players (age >19)

- 100 junior elite male players (age 16-19)

- 100 junior elite female players (age 16-19)

 Hip adduction and abduction strength of each leg will be assessed using the GroinBar (VALD Performance, Australia). Two test positions will be evaluated: a short lever (45°hip flexion) and a long lever (0° hip flexion).
