High knee valgus moments in a drop jump is shown to be an important risk factor for anterior cruciate ligament injuries. Research and experience also suggests that experiencing high knee valgus moments is stressful for the knee joint.
The goal of this project is to investigate the relationship between various factors and knee valgus moments in a drop jump.
Methods
We use data from a prospective cohort study initiated to determine risk factors for ACL-injuries (ACL risk factor study). The study includes the entire elite series in female team handball, and the first round of testing was conducted in 2007. The testing included a wide range of tests, including three-dimensional motion analysis which will give us the knee valgus moments in drop jumps. The association between factors as thigh strength, anatomical measures, balance and clinical tests and the outcome variable knee valgus moments will be examined.
Any relationships will contribute to a better understanding of what determines how we move our knees. Much of this information can be exploited in the process of improving existing prevention programs.
