OSTRC in Hong Kong

Intoduction

Dr. Tron Krosshaug, Dr. Kathrin Steffen and PhD student Torbjørn Soligard were recently invited to the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the SMART Convention 2009.

The SMART Convention 2009 was dedicated to sports medicine and rehabilitation therapy in Hong Kong. The aim is to improve the professional standard of exercise-for-health services and rehabilitation services after sports and occupational injuries, as well as to encourage all segments of society to enjoy the benefits of exercise.

The OSTRC staff was invited to the symposium of football medicine.

At this convention, Tron Krosshaug gave a talk on the mechanisms of ACL injuries in football. Kathrin Steffen illustrated the development of the warm-up and injury prevention program, the 11+, and how to implement it into the field, while Torbjørn Soligard presented current research on the synergistic effect of injury prevention and performance enhancement in sports.

The symposium on football sports medicine was followed by a workshop on “The 11+” with 60 enthusiastic coaches. Another work shop, provided by PhD student Justin Lee, an experienced fitness coach for a local professional football club, followed thereafter (read the news letter from Hong Kong).

Several new ideas for future research project collaboration were discussed with the Sports Performance and Biomechanism Laboratory at the Prince of Wales Hospital: elaboration on injury prevention and performance, injury surveillance in Hong Kong football, and injury mechanism analyses.

There was also time for sight seeing in Hong Kong, work outs, and for experiencing the contrasts of beautiful nature, heritage, and skyscrapers. Friendly people, excellent food, efficient transportation systems, heat and high humidity are just a few unforgettable memories for the Norwegian delegation.
