Ongoing projects aiming to prevent eating disorder in athletes
Intoduction
The Medical Commission of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Oslo Sport Trauma Research Center are working to protect the health of athletes.
The Medical Commission of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) gathered an expert group on the topic of the Female Athlete Triad to exchange knowledge in an endeavor to protect the health of the female athlete.
As a first result of this work over now several years, an IOC Consensus Statement on the Female Athlete Triad was published and released.
In February 2010, chaired by Patricia Sangenis, a group of experts discussed assiduously on how to disseminate the important messages of the Consensus statement.
As another result of this fruitful gathering, and as an even more practical tool, the IOC recently released 4 video clips “The Healthy Body Image in Sport” with famous athletes as front figures telling about their experiences on The female athlete triad. The motto is to communicate and learn more about the Female Athlete Triad.
From the Norwegian School of Sports Science (NIH), professor Jorunn Sundgot-Borgen, one of the leading experts in the field of eating disorders among elite athletes, participated.
The IOC, Norwegian School of Sport Sciences and the Oslo Sport Trauma Research Center (OSTRC) share a common aim, which is the protection of an athlete’s health. To come closer to this aim, project collaborations have been started.
Ongoing project among Elite Sport High Schools in Norway
The overall aim of this comprehensive 3 years randomized-controlled intervention project is to prevent disordered eating and eating disorders in adolescent elite male and female athletes.
All Elite Sport High Schools in Norway, 16 in total, are included in the project, and The 4 Healthy Body Image in Sport Video clips is part of the intervention and education package delivered.
The last post-test in this intervention study will be April 2011, and the results will be published in different high rankled international journals of sports clinical medicine and psychology.
The project group consists of PhD student Marianne Martinsen, professor Jorunn Sundgot–Borgen, and associated professor Anne Marte Pensgaard.
