Lars Engebretsen named IOC Head of Scientific Activities

Intoduction

Professor Lars Engebretsen, co-chair of the Oslo Sports Trauma Research Center, will soon start in a 50% position as Head of Scientific Activities in the IOC.

His work will initially be focused on the following items:

- Developing the IOC’s scientific activities in the field of sports sciences so as to position the IOC as THE reference in sports medicine and bio-medicine.

- By developing research and analysis in the field of sports medicine, increase the positioning of the IOC not only on the fight against doping, but also on the protection of athletes’ health.

- Act as the interface between the scientific community on the one hand (scientific societies etc.) and the sporting community on the other hand (NOCs, IFs, etc.).

- Propose to the Medical Commission fields of research that would be the most beneficial to study for the IOC and the sports community.

- Establish partnerships with scientists and scientific societies in order to work on the selected fields of research.

- As a result of this research, publish position statements for the IOC and communicate them throughout the Olympic Movement and sports community.

- Set up knowledge management mechanisms to share scientific research results with the field throughout the Olympic Movement and to convert these results into concrete actions to protect the health of the athletes. To this effect, he will have to coordinate the different sport medicines courses “sponsored” by the Olympic Solidarity under the umbrella of the Medical Commission

- Identify how the results of the research conducted might influence the preparation and the running of the Olympic Games or if the information collected at Games time (for instance at the polyclinics) could in turn be used for future research.

Professor Engebretsen will continue as a professor and orthopaedic surgeon at Ullevaal University Hospital and the Oslo Sports Trauma Research Center. His research will as before be focused on injury prevention, cartilage issues and ligament injuries. He will divide his time between Lausanne, Switzerland, where the IOC headquarter is located, and Oslo, Norway.
